Educational Concept

Porous media problems can be found in numerous fields of economic and ecologic interest. Potential areas of employment range from environmental and petroleum-related companies, via engineering consultants, the car-making industry, the manufacturing of filters and hygiene articles, bio-industries to administrative work in international or national government agencies. To meet the need for new developments, as well as for concurrent improvements of existing concepts, excellently trained researchers and engineers with an interdisciplinary background and international experience are required. Furthermore, new fields such as biomechanics and bio-systems science need people capable of crossing interdisciplinary boundaries. Training graduates qualified to develop new, effective, robust and predictive models in the field of flow and transport processes in complex porous media requires an environment such as SRP-NUPUS, where the gap between the disciplines can be bridged in an international group on the basis of a tailor-made research and education concept.

Our emphasis is to foster communication and interaction between all scientists with different educational backgrounds and to facilitate a common scientific language for international and interdisciplinary research in the field of porous media. Furthermore, the SRP-NUPUS provides a platform for comprehensive and dedicated soft-skill development, so that participating scientists are not only able to communicate their research to other scientists, e.g., via conference talks and workshops, or publications and posters, but also to the (non-academic) society. Therefore, the SRP-NUPUS educational concept consists of eight parts.

  1. Visiting scientists (Research Excellence)
  2. Short courses and summer schools (Attractive Institutional Environment)
  3. Master scholarships and supervising training (Quality Assurance)
  4. Soft skills and language courses (Transferable Skills Training)
  5. Publications and conferences (International Networking)
  6. Special issue workshops (Interdisciplinary Research Options)
  7. Visiting R&D cooperation partner (Exposure to Industry)
  8. Public outreach

The SRP-NUPUS informs about and offers courses, summer schools and workshops for (under-)graduate students and keeps scientists working in the field of porous media posted about upcoming international events. More information is available here.
